A PEACE OF SÁPMI
Welcome to learn about our traditions in Sami handcraft, and to learn to make your own peace of souvenir from Sápmi.
Máhte Máret, Piera Ailus mother and Bjørn Petters grandmother is a well known handicrafter here in Karasjok and Sápmi. Her skills and knowledge has suited many people among the years. She makes everything from the reindeer skin, like reindeer skin shoes, a warm hat made from reindeer skin, leather panths and “galssohat”, and she also sows the sami dress Gákti both for men and women. She learned this knowledge from her mother, and now she's teaching it to her descendants, and everything we do and make with sami handcraft, is learned and inspired by her.
During these hours you will learn about us and our family traditions in sami handcraft, and you will see different kind of handcraft made of Máhte Máret and our family. You will get to know how to work with the material whatever you choose to use, like leather, felt, or other material we used to make gákti, or reindeer antlers. When you're done with your handcraft, then you will off course get to take the souvenir home with you as a memento, a gift or a utility item that lasts forever. It can be earrings, a bracelet, a key ring or a jewerelly made of antlers or other rest material.
The rest material after sami handcraft we re-use by having workshops and to make souvenirs. Nothing goes to waste, as we try to use everything and throw as little as possible.
And of course, we will serve you a warm cup of chaga, coffee or tea during the workshop. Welcome!
