STAY TWO NIGHTS IN WONDERFUL SURROUNDINGS WITH THE REINDEER
Season: May - June
Max persons: 4
Place: Karasjok
Duration: 2 days
EXPERIENCE THE REINDEER CALVING SEASON
How about waking up in a lavvo to the sound of reindeer? To bells clinging like in a fairytale, to the sound of reindeer claws. To start the day like making fire in the lavvo, making good traditional coffee and just enjoy the silence and the reindeer.
Now you can spend the night in the calving area in your own lavvo. This is a two-day trip where you get to join us during the most important season of the year, namely the reindeer calving.
From 15th of May - 15th of June we herd the female reindeer during calving to prevent reindeer loss to predators such as eagles, bears, wolverines, lynx, foxes and even crows and ravens.
In the area where we calve the herd, it is important to show respect both to animals and nature, so here we travel quietly and calmly. This is a large area, over one mile in circumference, so the female reindeer will retreat slightly during calving itself, but will return to the main herd some time after the calf is born.
The trip to the calving area is a very special experience that few get the opportunity to experience, since this trip is unique and the only one of its kind in Norway that we know about.
You get to enjoy the days near the lavvo, where you can lie down or sit on reindeer skins and enjoy the view. You can wander around a bit near the lavvo, so you really get to melt into the surroundings. If you're really lucky, you can even see the female reindeer giving birth. In case of snow showers, you can enjoy the lavvo, with hot drinks and good food. You can also join us to work if you want, or just relax, and enjoy the tranquility and the wonderful nature and reindeer have to offer.
On this trip you get to take part in our traditions, and get to know us and our culture and way of life, in a very special way. You get a lunchbox with with dry food, and we come with fresh dinner food that we make together before we have to go out and work again.
We have a toilet tent, so you don't have to worry about hiding in the woods.
Miessemánnu – Reindeer calving month
Miessemánnu is known for calving storms. There may be days of sleet and snow showers. This is good weather for the female reindeer to calve, as they get to calve in peace and quiet, when the eagle does not hunt. In case of snow showers, you can enjoy the lavvo, with hot drinks and good food.
We have 2 lavvos in the area, a tent and a gumpi. We will spend the night in the calving area, only in different places, depending on where the herd is located, so we will be near you if there is anything.
It is 5 minutes drive from Karasjok city centre up to Guorpmet. From there there is about a 10 minute snowmobile trip to the lavvo, possibly with atv if there is little snow.
We pick you up at the airport in Lakselv, you come home with us and eat, and after we will og to the calving area. You get warm clothes from us to borrow and we will bring all the stuff you need at your stay in the lavvo. On your departure day, we will bring you back to Lakselv airport.
During 15th of may – 15th of june 2020 we herd the female reindeers 24/7 while they are giving birth to reindeer calves, to prevent attacks from predatures like eagles, bears, wolverines, lynx and even crows.
It is a 5 minute drive from Karasjok center up to Guorpmet. From there it is about a 30 minute long walk to the lavvo. If you do not have the opportunity to walk, we will recommend our day trip to our calving reindeer herd.
