A DAY WITH AUTUMN WORK IN PORSANGER
From 20th of September to 10th of october we are in Corvasrohtu in Porsanger working with the autumn work in the reindeer husbandry.
The autumn work is when the main distrikt is marking their reindeer calfs during the fence work, it is also the time for slaughtering, making food with blood and intestens, preparing skin for sowing and it is also the time when we take our male reindeer for taming.
We have a lavvo at our siida and we are working with different task when the reindeer are not in the fence, like slaughtering, cutting meat, preparing the skins to dry and preparing and having good meals together with the whole family.
By visiting us you will get to know us as a family, and you will see the work close up and you may also participate as much as you like. You will eat and get to taste good traditionally meal and you will learn alot about reinder husbandry and the atumn work.
“When we slaughter, we use the whole animal. We make food from the meat, fat, blood, heart, liver, head, tounge, nails, bones and intestens.
From the skin we dry it and use it as a soft underlayer. We also make leather for sowing, and we make shoes, hats, leather pants, bags and much more.
The antlers we use for decorating, we sell it, we make souvenirs from it and we make useful items of them.”
